Western Reserve opens season with a sweep

ORANGE TWP. — The Western Reserve volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a comfortable road sweep over host Mapleton on Tuesday in a Firelands Conference match.

The Roughriders won by three identical 25-10 scores.

Avery Tubbs led Western with 10 kills and four solo blocks, while Emma Weber had eight kills. Morgan Spettle served 12 points, while Baylee Ruppert and Kendall Weber each added 11. Jessa Riley led the defense with eight digs.

The ‘Riders (1-0, 1-0) are off until Aug. 27 at Plymouth.


Willard 3, Lexington 1

LEXINGTON — The visiting Crimson Flashes won two tight games to claim a four-game win over the host Lady Lex on Tuesday.

Willard (2-0) won by scores of 21-25, 25-9, 25-23, 26-24.

For Willard, Cassie Crawford had 16 kills and 23 digs, while Mckenna Stephens had 14 kills, 14 digs and was 21 for 22 serving with four aces.

Also for the Flashes, Haylie Hamons had 30 digs and Maraya Polacheck had 12 digs and was 21 for 23 serving with three aces. Chloe Weaver also had 34 assists.


South Central 3, New London 0

NEW LONDON — The Trojans swept Tuesday’s FC opener for both teams, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23.

Taylor Sexton had 10 kills for South Central, while Lorin Walcher added eight kills with 21 digs. Kailee Beaver served 11 points and had 13 digs.


Lucas 3, New London 1

LUCAS — The Wildcats lost Monday’s season opener to the host Cubs in three games, falling by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 19-25, 25-15.

For New London (0-1), Erin Conrad had seven kills and seven digs, and Marisa Molnar added four kills. Natalie Ferguson was 23 for 24 serving with seven points and led the defense with 11 digs. Also for the ‘Cats, Kaitlyn Ballinger was 72-of-78 setting with 15 assists.



Edison 5, U. Sandusky 1

MILAN — Edison’s Ian Janssen broke the program record for career goals in Tuesday’s non-league win over the visiting Rams in a weather-shortened matchup.

Connor Romell scored twice for the Chargers, with Dylan O’Dell, Sam Lopez and Janssen scoring once each.

Edison hosts Vermilion on Thursday.



Norwalk 3, Sandusky 2

SANDUSKY — The Truckers swept both doubles positions to win Tuesday’s SBC Lake Division match over the host Blue Streaks.

At first doubles, Gabby Horowitz and Alexa Moore blanked Anisha Chopra and Kayla Purdy (6-0, 6-0). The No. 2 tandem of Mara Berry and Erin Bleile then swept Sierra Young and Elizabeth Slader (6-0, 6-0).

Norwalk’s other win came at third singles, as Lauren Metcalf beat Abbie Wade (6-0, 6-1).

At first singles, Megan Berry fell to Marissa Esposito (6-0, 6-2), while Emma Trost lost to Alana Armstrong (6-2, 6-4) at second singles.


Edison 5, Fre. SJCC 0

FREMONT — The Chargers swept the host Crimson Streaks to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SBC Bay Division.

At first singles, Jayla Medina topped Olivia Eshelman (6-1, 6-0), while Emily Vogus swept Hannah Schnell (6-0, 6-0) at second singles. At third singles, the Chargers’ Lindsey Kowalski beat Hannah Paeth (6-2, 6-2).

At first doubles, Kaylee Ries and Tori Keyser topped Mara Wehring and Madison Wilson (6-1, 6-0). At second doubles, Emily Moore and All Vogus defeated Maddie Wammas and Audrey Burkin (6-0, 6-1).



Bellevue 168, Sandusky 278

CLYDE — The Redmen had no trouble with visiting Sandusky on Tuesday in an SBC Lake Division match at Sleepy Hollow.

For Bellevue, Hudson Strayer was low with a 40. He was followed by Alex Martinez (42), Adam Hosang (43), Layne Krupp (43) and Hayden Foos (46).



Norwalk 5, Port Clinton 0

NORWALK — The Truckers picked up their first win of the season with a 5-0 win over visiting Port Clinton on Monday at the Norwalk Soccer Complex.

Nyah Daniels and Gwen Olcott each scored twice for Norwalk (1-1), while Joscey Thomas added the fifth goal. In net, Makaila White made five saves.

Norwalk entertains Edison at 5 p.m. today.
