Monroeville bounces back with sweep over Wildcats

MONROEVILLE — The Eagles bounced back quickly from their first loss of the season on Tuesday with a sweep over visiting New London in Firelands Conference play on Thursday.

Monroeville (4-1, 2-1) won by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-10 over visiting New London.

For the Eagles, Kelsie Palmer and Graisyn Yoder each had nine kills, while Maura Brown, Kylee Brooks and Adrian Barman each had six kills. Camryn Hedrick had 24 assists, while Palmer was also 14 for 15 serving with three aces.

Also for Monroeville, Maddie Elmlinger was 21 for 21 serving with an ace and 10 digs, and Stacia Stieber led the defense with 20 digs.

For New London (0-5, 0-3), Gabby Ledbetter had seven kills, with Lili Bartow and Katie Layport each serving five points. Brooklyn Hudson had 12 digs and Cassidy Lay had seven.

Also for the ‘Cats, Bartow was 62-of-66 setting with 13 assists.

W. Reserve 3, Plymouth 0

COLLINS — The Roughriders cruised past the Big Red in Thursday’s FC match by scores of 25-7, 25-11, 25-6.

For Western (3-0, 3-0), Avery Tubbs was 19-of-21 hitting with 13 kills, while Morgan Spettle added nine kills. Hannah Burke served 28 points with nine aces, and Morgan White added 12 points with four aces.

Also for the ‘Riders, Alyssa Burch served eight points with two aces.

St. Paul 3, Crestview 1

NORWALK — The Lady Flyers withstood another four-set FC challenge this week by beating visiting Crestview on Thursday.

St. Paul won 25-12, 21-25, 25-16, 25-15, to improve to 3-0 overall and in the FC.

Pacing the Lady Flyers was Kamryn Maxwell with 23 kills and 17 digs. Dyllan Knoll served 16 points with four aces and had 29 assists, while Megan Hammersmith also had a big night with 15 kills, 18 assists and 14 digs.

Also for St. Paul, Lauren Chandler served 15 points with four aces, while both Holly Powers and Anna Lukasko each had seven kills. Kennedy Stang led the defense with 21 digs.

South Central 3, Mapleton 0

GREENWICH — The Trojans picked up their second FC win this week with a sweep over visiting Mapleton on Thursday.


South Central won by scores of 25-20, 25-9, 25-11.


Taylor Sexton led the Trojans with 10 kills, with Lorin Walcher and Izzy Hauler each adding four. Walcher and Hauler added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.


Also for the Trojans, Ellery McKee was 70-of-71 setting with 18 assists, while Kailee Beaver had 14 digs.

Norwalk 3, Clyde 0

CLYDE — Visiting Norwalk responded to Tuesday’s home loss vs. Columbian with a road sweep over the host Fliers on Thursday.

Norwalk (2-1, 1-1) won by scores of 25-22, 25-12, 25-18.

Carly Bilton paced Norwalk with nine kills, and Mya Neuberger added eight. Olivia Ward had 31 assists and nine digs.

Also for Norwalk, Haleigh Skinner had 14 digs, while Elyse Balduff added five aces serving and five digs.

“The girls came out ready to play tonight,” Norwalk coach Sarah Kipp said. “They started from the first point and kept their momentum through the entire match.”

Norwalk will host its annual eight-team Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. It opens with Tiffin Calvert in the first round.

Willard 3, Port Clinton 0

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes swept visiting Port Clinton in an SBC Bay match on Thursday, 25-9, 25-20, 25-18.

For Willard, Cassie Crawford had 11 kills, with McKenna Stephens adding six kills to go with 8 for 9 serving and four aces.

Jena Adams had 10 assists and eight digs, while Chloe Weaver was 21 for 21 serving with two aces and nine assists.


Also for the Flashes, Lydia Wiers was 8 for 8 serving with two aces.

Vermilion 3, Edison 1


VERMILION — The Chargers fell in four on the road against the unbeaten Sailors in SBC Bay action on Thursday.


Vermilion won by scores of 22-25, 25-11, 25-23 and 25-20.

Bellevue 3, Perkins 2

BELLEVUE — The Lady Red scored a big home win to secure their early spot atop the SBC Lake division race on Thursday.


Bellevue outlasted previously unbeaten Perkins in five games, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 17-15.


For the Lady Red (6-0, 2-0), Payton Vogel was 51-of-60 with 35 kills and five blocks — and also led the defense with 26 digs. Taylor Baxter was 41-of-46 with 21 kills, three blocks and 18 digs.


Also for Bellevue, Molly Bullion was 121-of-121 setting with 63 assists and 20 digs, while Madison Hrynciw served three aces and had 14 digs.


Willard 5, Huron 0

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes continued their strong start to the season with a sweep over visiting Huron in an SBC Bay match on Thursday.

At first singles, Emma Moll won over Desiree Fisher (6-3, 7-6 (4) to get Willard (6-1, 4-0) going. Carlee Gibson topped Riley Fry at second singles (6-0, 6-1), with Addison Paxton winning by the same scores at third singles over Hannah Brunow (6-0, 6-1).

The first doubles team of Addie Slone and Jo Brubaker defeated Libby Faflith and Katelyn Rogers in a sweep (6-0, 6-0), as did the No. 2 team of Tori Barnett and Whitney Robinson over Presley Byrd and Morgan Gast (6-0, 6-0).

Edison 5 Oak Harbor 0

MILAN — The Chargers cruised once again in SBC Bay action, sweeping the visiting Rockets to improve to 7-1 overall (4-0 Bay).

At first singles, Mariah Medina won a lengthy three-set match over Chloe Duquette, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-2. At second singles, Jayla Medina beat Addie Hasselbach (6-1, 6-4), and Emily Vogus topped Mya Lenke in a sweep at third singles (6-0, 6-0).

At No. 1 doubles, the team of Kaylee Ries and Torri Keyser defeated Christine Arent and Vivian Kankle (6-2, 6-4). The second doubles team of Lexi Weyer and Emily Moore edged Bailey Lafountain and Haley Hess (6-4, 4-6, 6-2).


New London 166, Mapleton 213

ASHLAND — The Wildcats pushed their unbeaten record to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the FC with an easy win over the host Mounties.

Ben Crawshaw led the ‘Cats witha 35 for low score of the match. He was followed by Jaylin Moffit (43), Sean Andolsek (43) and Sean Armold (45). Also scoring for New London was Kotiana Barber (52) and Marcus Mayhorn (57).


Norwalk 9, Columbian 1

NORWALK — The Truckers picked up their first win of the season in Wednesday’s rout over visiting Tiffin Columbian in an SBC Lake division match at the Norwalk Soccer Complex.

Goals for Norwalk were scored by Jose Escebedo (4) and Will Gehlhausen (2), with Jose Ruiz, Nate LaRoche, and Brian Moralas each adding one goal each.

Assists came from Gehausen (2), Obermeyer and Regan Zieber. Tyler Clark and Ethan Tanzillo each recorded a save at goalkeeper.


Norwalk 3, Columbian 0

TIFFIN — The Norwalk girls soccer team improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the SBC Lake division with Wednesday’s shutout win over the Tornadoes.

Coley Branum scored the first two goals for Norwalk, while Michaela Rush closed out the scoring with a second-half goal. Makaila White made seven saves in goal. 

Norwalk is off until Wednesday when it visits Clyde in another league matchup.

Edison 5, Vermilion 0

VERMILION — The Chargers improved to 3-1 with Wednesday night’s road shutout over the Sailors.

Piper Nickoli scored twice for the Chargers, and added an assist. Sophie Clark scored off a penalty kick and also added two assists. Aliyah Caporini and Avery Wolfe each addedone goal. 

The defense got its second shutout of the season, led by Josie Soviak, Katie Nealey, Katelyn Chenevey, Emma Houser, and goalkeeper Elizabeth Pruitt. Edison is off until next Wednesday when it visits Port Clinton.
