Willard falls to SBC Lake favorite Pirates in four

WILLARD — The Willard volleyball team pushed Perkins, the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake division preseason favorites — to a fourth game in Thursday’s non-league match.

The Pirates won by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18.

"The intensity was much better tonight — and we made Perkins fight for the victory," Willard coach Ashley Bond said. "We kind of ran out of gas, and I take total responsibility for that.

"We have seen some tough teams to start the season, and it doesn't get any easier on Monday when we take on Bellevue," she added.

Leading Willard on Thursday was Cassie Crawford. She finished 42-of-46 hitting with 16 kills while adding 18 digs. She was also 14 for 14 serving. Chloe Wiers added eight kills and four blocks at the net.

Also for the Crimson Flashes, Jena Adams had 15 assists and 18 digs, while Chloe Weaver had 16 assists and was 10 for 11 serving with an ace. Haylie Hamons had 15 digs and was 20 for 21 serving with an ace, while Alyse Cok added seven kills and McKenna Stephens had nine digs.

Monroeville 3, Lexington 1

LEXINGTON — The Eagles picked up a big non-league win over Division II Lexington on the road Thursday night.

Monroeville (2-0) won in four games, 25-21, 16-25, 25-13, 25-18.

Kylee Brooks had a big night at the net for the Eagles. She finished with 14 kills and five blocks, while Adrian Barman added 11 kills. Graisyn Yoder had nine kills and nine digs, and Camryn Hedrick was 107-of-109 setting with 41 assists and 17 for 20 serving with three aces.

Also for the Eagles, Stacia Stieber was 22 for 25 serving with a pair of aces and 25 digs. Josee Brown was 15 for 16 serving with two aces and 10 digs, while Kelsie Palmer had six kills and three blocks. Maura Brown added five kills and four blocks, and Maddie Elmlinger had 10 digs.

South Central tops Mans. Christian

MANSFIELD — The Trojans improved to 2-1 with Thursday’s non-league win over the host Flames.

For South Central, Izzy Hauler had 10 kills and 12 digs, with Taylor Sexton adding three kills and 13 digs. Lorin Walcher finished with 14 digs, six service aces and two kills, and Ellery McKee was 77-of-78 setting with 23 assists.

Scores of the match were not provided.

Black River 3, New London 1

SULLIVAN — The Wildcats fell to 0-3 with Thursday’s non-league loss to the host Pirates, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 25-15. 

No further information was provided. 

Edison 3, Clyde 0

CLYDE — The Chargers improved to 1-1 with Thursday’s non-league win over the host Fliers.

Edison won in a sweep, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23. 

Lilli Schuster had eight kills and eight points for the Chargers (1-1), while Hannah Vitaz and Kira Appeman each added eight kills. Appeman also had 12 points with three aces.

Also for Edison, Natalie Lambert had 31 assists, 11 digs and served seven points. Grace Houser added 13 digs, with Melissa Kuhl, Jessica Stoll and Haley Brown each adding three kills.

Bellevue 3, Fremont Ross 1

FREMONT — The Lady Red improved to 3-0 with a third win this week, topping host Fremont Ross in four games Thursday night.

The Lady Red won by scores of 19-25, 25-8, 25-17 and 25-20.

For Bellevue, Payton Vogel was 31-of-38 hitting with 19 kills and three blocks. She was also 17 for 19 serving for four aces and added 10 digs. Taylor Baxter was 27-of-31 hitting with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Also for the Lady Red, Molly Bullion was 87-of-87 setting with 37 assists, 14 digs and was 21 for 22 serving with an ace.

Lucas 3, Plymouth 0

LUCAS — The Big Red was swept in Thursday’s non-league match against the host Cubs to fall to 1-2 on the season.

No further information was provided. Plymouth hosts Mansfield Christian on Saturday.


Norwalk 4, Clyde 1

CLYDE — Visiting Norwalk picked up a key SBC Lake division win over the host Fliers on Thursday, winning all but third singles.

Megan Berry got Norwalk (5-1, 1-0) going at first singles, beating Lakotah Cagle (6-2, 6-2). Gabby Horowitz followed with a straight sets win at No. 2 singles, beating Siera Hisey (6-3, 6-2). At third singles, Lauren Metcalf lost a tough marathonmatch to Clyde’s Emma Strudthoff, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.

At first doubles, it was Jordan Gran and Sela Berry beating Megan Barrett and Hali Hagemeyer (6-1, 6-4). At No. 2 doubles, Mara Berry and Alexa Moore topped Mary Wilkerson and McKenzi Woessner (6-4, 6-0).

Willard 5, Port Clinton 0

PORT CLINTON — The Crimson Flashes picked up a win for the second straight day, this time in SBC Bay division action against the host Redskins.

Emma Moll topped Alaina Dackermann at first singles (6-0, 6-2), while Carlee Gibson topped Hannah Cross at second singles (6-1, 6-2). At third singles for Willard (3-1, 1-0), Addison Paxton beat Ally Batterton (6-0, 6-1).

At first doubles, the tandem of Addie Slone and Jo Brubaker beat Amelia Smith and Madi McGlothlin (6-0, 6-1). Capping the sweep at No. 2 doubles, Tori Barnett and Kennedy Daub swept Olivia Eickert and Paige Reineck (6-0, 6-0).

Perkins 5 Bellevue 0

BELLEVUE — The Lady Red fell to 1-3 (0-1) following a sweep against the unbeaten Pirates.

At first singles, Perkins’ Emma Lynch topped Rayven Whyde (6-1, 6-1), while Bellevue’s Leighann Motley was swept at second singles vs. Maria Schoder (6-0, 6-0). At third singles, Kaitlyn Cullen fell to Dehvin Shumate (6-0, 6-3).

Ella Little and Alivia Hamons fell at first doubles (6-2, 6-1); and Sage Garcia and Perla Monreal lost to Abriye Skelton and Katie Koch at second doubles (6-3, 7-6 (3).

Edison 5, SMCC 0

SANDUSKY — The Chargers swept the host Panthers in Thursday’s non-league match at Battery Park in Sandusky.

At first singles, Mariah Medina picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win. At second singles, it was Jayla Medina winning 6-0, 6-1. At third singles, Emily Vogus won 6-1, 6-0.

At first doubles, the tandem of Kaylee Ries and Torri Keysor won in a sweep (6-0, 6-0). The No. 2 doubles position saw Lexi Weyer and Emily Moore win, 6-1, 6-2 for the Chargers (3-1, 1-0).


Edison 4, Upper Sandusky 0

MILAN — The Chargers are off to a 2-0 start after Thursday’s non-league shutout against visiting Upper Sandusky.

Edison opened the scoring off a corner kick by Aliyah Caporini to Autumn Canterbury. Piper Nickoli, Sophie Clark and Holly Racioppi scored the other goals for the Chargers, with Caporini and Nickoli adding assists.


Mans. Madison 6, Norwalk 1

NORWALK — The Truckers fell in Wednesday’s non-league match against the visiting Rams.

For Norwalk (0-2), Garrison Smith scored the lone goal off a corner kick, as it deflected off a Rams player. Tyler Clark recorded numerous saves for Norwalk.


Norwalk splits with Perkins, Columbian

NORWALK — The Norwalk boys golf team hosted Tiffin Columbian and Perkins on Wednesday at Eagle Creek.

The Truckers (2-3 SBC Lake) fell to Columbian, 169-172; then topped the Pirates by a stroke, 172-173.

In the loss to Columbian, Carter Kluding and Zach Crane each shot a 42, while Noah Scheel and Gavin Koelsch each had 44s. Against Perkins, it was Justin Sommers and Kyle Smith each shooting a 48, followed by Isaac Scheel (51) and Caleb Sommers (54).
