Norwalk tennis team clinches share of SBC Lake title

 SANDUSKY — The Norwalk girls tennis team (15-1) clinched at least a share of their first SBC Lake Division title Tuesday, sweeping the Blue Streaks to move to 10-0 in league play.

Norwalk has now won five league titles in the last six years, including the final five Northern Ohio League championships.

In the highlight match of the night, the Truckers’ No. 1 doubles team of usual singles players Jordan Gran and Megan Berry, rebounded from a 6-7 (5) first set loss to top Sandusky’s Alana Armstrong and Marissa Esposito 6-2, 10-4 in the final two sets.

Singles: Gabby Horowitz (N) def. Audrey Smith (S), 7-5, 7-5; Alexa Moore (N) def. Baylie Tieche (S), 6-4, 6-3; Lauren Metcalf (N) def. Kristen Ehrnsberger (S), 6-0. 6-0.

Doubles: Sela Berry/Mara Berry (N) def. Aonesty Cogar/Sumerlyn Thomas (S), 6-1, 6-0.

VOLLEYBALL

South Central 3, New London 0

GREENWICH — Taylor Sexton had 10 kills and served 12 points, including three aces as the Trojans swept the Wildcats, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23.

Lorin Walcher served 16 points for South Central (8-9, 5-5), tallying two aces. Ellery McKee had four blocks, Izzy Hauler added three. Walcher and Hauler each had 16 digs while Kailee Beaver had 14 and Sexton 13. McKee had 19 assists.

For New London (2-15, 2-8), Gabby Ledbetter tallied 12 kills, Lili Bartow had 21 assists and Brooklyn Hudson had 25 digs.

On Tuesday, New London dropped a tough five-game match in non-league play at home against Wellington.

The ‘Cats fell in scores of 15-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-17, 15-9. Katie Layport was 43-of-47 hitting with 15 kills, Catherine Blaser was 30-of-33 with 11 kills and Ledbetter added 10 kills.

Hudson served 12 points with three aces and had 27 digs, while Bartow was 130-of-132 setting with 39 assists, also served 12 points and added 13 digs. Layport also added 10 digs.

Western Reserve 3, Mapleton 0

ORANGE TWP. — Jessa Riley served for 15 points while Morgan White had 13 kills as the Roughriders swept the Mounties 25-10, 25-9, 25-6 in the FC.

Hannah Burke was 85 of 86 setting with 33 assists. Hannah Burke had 13 points serving and Avery Tubbs had 10 kills.

Vermilion 3, Edison 1

MILAN — Maddie Colahan set a new school record with eight solo blocks as the Sailors beat the Chargers 25-21, 24-26, 25-12, 25-20.

Colahan also served 13 points, including four aces and tallied 10 kills for Vermilion (11-5, 5-4). Bree Calaway had 41 assists, Angie Fetsic had 24 digs and Cam Colahan had 11 kills.

For Edison (5-9, 3-5), Natalie Lambert served five points, including five aces. Hannah Vitaz had seven blocks and Alana Fidler had six. Grace Houser chipped in 25 digs and Jessica Stoll had 10.

Willard 3, Port Clinton 0

PORT CLINTON — Willard swept Port Clinton in SBC Bay division action Tuesday, 25-11, 25-12, 25-9.

With the win, the Crimson Flashes improved to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the Bay division.

Lydia Wiers had 13 kills and four blocks for Willard, while Chloe Weaver had 12 assists and Jena Adams added 11.

As a team, Willard was 69 for 70 serving with eight aces, led by Cassie Crawford (27 for 27, four aces).

Bellevue 3, Perkins 2

PERKINS TWP. — The state-ranked Lady Red (13-2, 6-1) kept pace with Norwalk atop the SBC Lake standings with their second five-game win over the Pirates this season.

Bellevue won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-11.
