Norwalk girls tennis inches closer to SBC Lake crown

VERMILION — The Norwalk girls tennis team moved one win closer to clinching at least a share of the SBC Lake division championship with a 5-0 sweep over Vermilion on Monday.

At first singles, Megan Berry dropped one game in a win over Macy Boger (6-0, 6-1), while Gabby Horowitz did the same at second singles against Kelsey Osborn (6-1, 6-0). Lauren Metcalf won by default at third singles.

Both Norwalk doubles teams won in sweeps (6-0, 6-0). The No. 1 team of Jordan Gran and Sela Berry beat Karsyn Brewer and Olivia Stacklin. The second doubles team of Mara Berry and Alexa Moore beat Kara Shockley and Emilley Smith.

Norwalk (14-1, 9-0) is off until the individual SBC Lake tournament on Thursday, which will be at the Middle School beginning at 9 a.m.

Willard 5, Fre. SJCC 0

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes remained unbeaten in the SBC Bay with Monday’s sweep of visiting Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic.

For Willard (13-1, 11-0), Emma Moll swept Gloria Rhinehart at first singles (6-0, 6-0), with Carlee Gibson beating Olivia Eshleman (6-2, 6-0) at second singles. Addison Paxton had a walkover default win at third singles.

At first doubles, Addie Slone and Jo Brubaker topped Erin Borer and Hannah Shell (6-1, 6-0). The No. 2 team of Whitney Robinson and Kennedy Daub then swept Hannah Harbert and Shayla Steinberger (6-0, 6-0).

Edison 5, Huron 0

HURON — The Chargers improved to 12-2 overall and 10-1 in the SBC Bay division — staying one back of Willard in the loss column.

At first singles, Mariah Medina defeated Desiree Fisher (6-1, 6-3), while Jayla Medina beat Riley Frye (6-1, 6-2) at second singles. Thirs singles saw Emily Vogus beat Hannah Brunow (6-0, 6-1).

The No. 1 doubles team of Kaylee Ries and Torri Keyser defeated Presley Byrd and Katelynn Rogers (6-2, 6-2). The second doubles team of Lexi Weyer and Emily Moore also beat Libby Faflik and Riley Roldan (6-0, 7-5).


Huron 2, Edison 0

HURON — The visiting Chargers lost to unbeaten Huron (7-0) in a 2-0 setback to the host Tigers on Monday in SBC Bay action.

Edison looks to bounce back on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. home match vs. Vermilion.


Sandusky 1, Norwalk 1

NORWALK — The Norwalk boys soccer team tied Sandusky 1-1 on Monday in SBC Lake action.

Jose Escebedo scored for the Truckers, who travel to Tiffin Columbian on Wednesday.

Edison 1, Huron 1

HURON — Edison and the Tigers tied in an SBC Bay Division matchup.

Jeremiah Green scored for Huron (3-1-3) in the first half and Edison got on the board off a goalkeeper error on the Tigers’ side.


New London 174, Plymouth 193

NEW LONDON — The Wildcats ran their record to 14-0 overall (7-0 Firelands Conference) with Monday’s win over visiting Plymouth at Millstone Hills.

Ben Crawshaw was medalist with a 37 for New London. He was followed by Sean Armold (39), Jaylin Moffit (44), Sean Andolsek (54), Luke Smith (68) and Marcus Mayhorn (68).

For Plymouth, Jacob Adams led the way with a 42, followed by Nate Sexton with a 45. Also for the Big Red, Draven Kelly and Zeb Finnegan each fired 53s, Brody Brown added a 54 and Emily Blanton had a 63.

Bellevue shoots a 183

SANDUSKY — The Redmen golfers totaled a 183 on Monday at Mills Creek in Sandusky.

For Bellevue, Garrett Vickery had a 43, followed by Jackson Moyer (46), Andrew Dye (47), Connor Rospert (47), Alex Martinez and Hayden Foos (54).

The Blue Streaks have just one golfer, Wyatt Schenk, who had a 57.


South Central, St. Paul ranked

COLUMBUS — In the second weekly Ohio high school football Associated Press state poll, a pair of Firelands Conference teams remain ranked in Division VII.

Unbeaten South Central (4-0, 1-0) — off to its best start in 38 years — appears at No. 11 — while St. Paul (3-1, 1-0) is 14th.

The Trojans are at Monroeville (2-2, 0-1) this Friday, and the Flyers travel to Plymouth (2-2, 0-1).

Also of note within the region, Sandusky (4-0) is No. 3 in Div. III, while Seneca East (15th) and Tiffin Calvert (10th) are ranked in Div. VI and Div. VII.


Edison 3, SMCC 0

SANDUSKY — The visiting Chargers improved to 4-7 overall with Monday night’s non-league win over host St. Mary Central Catholic.

The Chargers won by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-12.

For Edison, Kira Appeman had eight kills, 14 points and four aces, with Hannah Vitaz and Lilli Schuster each adding seven kills.

Also for the Chargers, Natalie Lambert had 22 assists and seven points, while Grace Houser had 10 digs and seven points. Danielle Blatnik had 10 points and two aces, with Olivia Vitaz adding 11 assists. Melissa Kuhl had four kills and Maddi Proy added five digs.
