NORWALK — Host Norwalk made a huge step toward winning its first-ever Sandusky Bay Conference Lake division championship on Thursday.

Facing its stiffest test of the season for a second time in less than three weeks, the Truckers won four of five positions over visiting Perkins to claim a 4-1 win over the Pirates at the Norwalk Middle School courts.

With the win, Norwalk improved to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in the Lake. Perkins fell to 8-3, 5-2. The Truckers are up two in the loss on the rest of the SBC Lake.

"Coming into the fall, we knew that Perkins would be a huge matchup for us,” Norwalk coach Chris Higgins said. “After beating them at Perkins in a close contest earlier in the season (Aug. 27), the ladies played extremely well today — and took a huge step toward a potential SBC Lake Division title.”

At first singles, Megan Berry got Norwalk rolling with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Emma Lynch. At second singles, Gabby Horowitz topped Maria Schoder in nearly a sweep, winning 6-0, 6-1.

“Megan was a great game manager today as she kept making Perkins have to fight for points,” Higgins said. “Gabby played her best match of the season today. She was competitive in every single point throughout both sets.”

The lone win for Perkins came at third singles. Dehvin Shumate topped Lauren Metcalf (6-2, 6-3).

“Lauren found her self in a very long match that did not quite go her way,” Higgins said.

At first doubles, Norwalk’s Jordan Gran and Sela Berry made quick work of Ryleigh Keller and Diana Schoder, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Mara Berry and Alexa Moore won by the exact same scores over Katie Koch and Abriye Skelton.

“Both doubles teams were outstanding today as they were able to take control of their matches from the very first point,” Higgins said. “The entire coaching staff is really proud of the effort the ladies showed today. We look forward to finishing out the SBC schedule and taking part in the SBC tournament next week at Norwalk."

Norwalk is at Vermilion on Monday prior to the SBC individual tournament next Thursday at Norwalk.
