Monroeville's Helmstetter, Tommas voted top FC players

A pair of Monroeville standouts were named the Firelands Conference Pitcher and Players of the Year, the league announced on Thursday.

Senior Ashlyn Tommas was selected as the Player of the Year, while junior ace Carley Helmstetter was the Pitcher of the Year. 

Tommas played in 26 games for the Eagles (24-4) and batted .506 (44-of-87). She had 10 doubles, a triple, a home run and 31 RBIs while also scoring 27 runs.

In 134 1/3 innings in the circle this season (23 starts), Helmstetter was 20-2 with a 0.99 ERA. She allowed 19 earned runs on 77 hits with 228 strikeouts and 19 walks. Offensively, she hit .342 with four doubles, one home run and 24 RBIs.

Also earning first team for Monroeville was senior Paige Schafer and junior Alex Carper.

In 27 games, Schafer batted .452 with eight doubles, four triples, two home runs and 21 RBIs. She also scored 38 runs. Carper appeared in 24 games and batted .457 with two doubles, a triple, 17 RBIs and 35 runs scored.

Also on first team was South Central’s Desiree Chill, who clubbed seven home runs along with eight doubles, 31 RBIs and a .479 average. Her teammate, Sarah Oney, was also on first team after batting .535 with three doubles, five triples and 15 RBIs.

Rounding out area first team selections were Plymouth juniors Shilo Plank and Morgan Chaffins.

Second team selections from the area included New London’s Kathy Vangilder, Elizabeth Logan, Emily Dalton and Gabby Ledbetter. Monroeville’s Brooke Kime and South Central’s Taylor Sexton were also second team, along with the Plymouth trio of Mallory Miller, Tristen Wiley and Emily Akers.

Honorable mention selections included St. Paul’s Kennedy Stang, Cassidy Lay (New London), Morganne Stanley (Monroeville), Izabelle Good (Western Reserve), Kailee Beaver (South Central) and Ariel Plank (Plymouth).
