New London blanks Fostoria to advance

NEW LONDON — The New London softball team advanced to Friday’s Division III sectional title game with a 9-0 win over Fostoria on Tuesday.

The No. 6-seeded Wildcats (10-6) will visit No. 4 Galion at 5 p.m. Friday for a spot in the district semifinals next week at Lexington.

In Tuesday’s win, ace Kathy Vangilder came through with a complete-game, four-hit shutout. She struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. 

Offensively for New London, which scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Elizabeth Logan was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Kelsey Boswell doubled and drove in three runs, while Vangilder, Cassidy Lay and Gabby Ledbetter each added two hits.

Bucyrus 11, W. Reserve 0 (5 inn.)

BUCYRUS — The Roughriders (0-21) were no-hit over five innings in Tuesday’s Div. III sectional semifinal loss.

Isabelle Good was charged with seven earned runs over four innings in the circle for Western.

South Central 10, St. Paul 1

NORWALK — South Central defeated St. Paul in Firelands Conference action Tuesday.

Chiara Powell led the Trojans (10-11, 4-6 FC) with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Sarah Oney, Kailee Beaver and Emma Keysor each had two hits and two RBIs.

Oney added a triple, while Keysor had a double.

Morgan Baxter had two hits for the Lady Flyers (7-12, 4-8). Marlaina Sowers singled and drove in the lone run, and Kennedy Stang also had a single.

Oney earned the win in the circle for South Central, striking out five batters, walking one and allowing one earned run on four hits.

U. Sandusky 6, Norwalk 5

UPPER SANDUSKY — The Truckers fell by a run in Tuesday’s Div, II sectional semifinal against the host Rams.

Huron 4, Willard 2

WILLARD — Huron defeated the Crimson Flashes in SBC Bay division action Tuesday.

Narcicio Resendez had a double and an RBI for the Crimson Flashes, while Daniel Hall had two hits and an RBI. Austin Adelman and Spencer Parrott each singled and scored.

Crestview 7, New London 5

NEW LONDON — The Wildcats fell to 8-11 overall (5-7 FC) with Tuesday’s home loss to the Cougars.

Wyatt Shockley was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for New London, while Derek Smith, Josh Hess, Kevin Fridenstine each added one hit.

Mapleton 15, Plymouth 5 (5 inn.)

NANKIN TWP. — Six errors in the field was the undoing for the Big Red in Tuesday’s FC loss at Mapleton.

For Plymouth (12-10, 8-4), Seth Bailey had two hits that included a double. Trevor Lane and AJ Hamann each added two hits. Walker Elliot singled with two RBIs, while Anthony Montgomery and Avery Horne each singled and drove in one.

Oak Harbor 5, Edison 3

OAK HARBOR — The Chargers fell to 11-8 overall (9-3 Bay) with Tuesday’s loss against the Rockets.

Bryce Roberts had two hits and a double for the Chargers (12-8, 9-3), while Cody Scott added two hits and two RBIs, Jadon Hanson was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Richard Crooks added a hit.

Crooks took the loss, striking out four batters, walking five and allowing one earned run in six innings.


Norwalk 4, Bellevue 1

NORWALK — The Truckers defeated Bellevue in SBC Lake division action Tuesday.

The Redmen’s (12-7, 7-6) lone win came at second singles, as Nate Fox bested Ben Traczek (6-2, 6-1).

For Norwalk (14-7, 11-3), Austin Brown and Jack Mei defeated Logan Miller (6-3, 6-2) and Jordan Schaefer (7-5, 6-2) at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.

In doubles, Andrew Riley and Wyatt Brown bested Justin Baxter and Richie Stombaugh at No. 1 (6-4, 6-1), while Eric Hull and Jordan Cotterill beat Gunnar Lilly and Zach Fischer at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1).
