She was born on January 11, 1937, to the late David H. and Eveline L. (Burke) Becker, in Hanover, Illinois, and came to Ohio in 1940. She graduated from Townsend-Wakeman High School in 1955, and attended Ashland University. While still in high school, Bette started her first job at the Cap Henry Phone Company, (later known as Bell Company), as a switchboard operator. She later worked as the society editor at the Norwalk Reflector. She sold Avon and Fuller Brush products and was once known as the “Fuller Brush Lady” in the Norwalk area.
In the late 1970’s, she worked for the City of Norwalk as a meter maid and helped with clerical office duties for Norwalk City Hall. She later worked for the CertainTeed Corporation in Milan, Ohio, as a receptionist / office clerk.
Bette and her husband Scott, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, even Hawaii. She also traveled overseas where she spent a year living in France, and later visited Sicily, and Israel, twice. Her daughters will fondly remember their summer vacation trips as kids with their Mom when she would drive to visit close friends of the family who lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New York.
Bette was passionate about reading and studying the Bible and expressing the love of the Lord, Jesus Christ to others. She and her husband Scott, enjoyed attending church where they both occasionally taught Sunday school and would assist with youth groups and children’s ministries.
She is survived by her daughters, Joni (John) Blystone, of North Fairfield, Ohio, and Linda (Kevin) Nickoli, of Norwalk, Ohio, by her brother Rhene (Betty) Becker, of Dayton, Ohio and by one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, along with several sister’s and brother’s in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, of 37 years, Scott Sommer, by her brother, Larry Becker, by her granddaughter, Jennifer Blystone, by her uncle, John Howard Burke, by her aunt, Florence Burke, and a niece, Kristie Becker Ligon.
