Leonard served in the US Naval Air Corp during WWII and also with the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War.
He had an interest in the American Flag and patriotism, placing approximately 300 flags in the community for most of the recognized flag days and for funerals of local veterans. He was a member of the Broome-Wood American Legion, Post #292 and had been awarded “Citizen of the Year” by the New London Rotary.
Leonard was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he was an organist for many years.
He drove steel truck for 29 years, was an avid reader, and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and education, having taken 77 various courses over the years. He enjoyed photography, developing his own film, and traveling.
Leonard was a certified scuba instructor and had taught several people in the local community to dive. He dove at Palm Harbor, FL and had cleared at 100 feet. He also dove at several local quarries and at Blue Hole in Castalia.
Leonard was very helpful to several people in the local community.
He is survived by special friend, Martha Ackerman of New London; several nieces and nephews; step-daughters, Cheryl Ewing of Florida and Roberta Ulm of New London, and 12 step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his brothers John, Damien, Ernie, Ronnie and Patrick.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 10th, with all services at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, New London, OH. Burial will follow the mass at Holy Cross Cemetery in New London.
