Clevelanders hear a lot about paczki (pronounced PUUNCH-ki) in the days leading up to Lent. But what, exactly, are these Polish treats?

Paczki have been made in Poland since the Middle Ages. The filled, deep-fried dough balls are covered with powdered sugar. Traditional fillings include prune and poppyseed. Many bakeries also feature modern fillings such as chocolate mousse, marshmallow and pina colada.

In Cleveland, they are a tradition, with lines winding out area bakeries for the sweet treats on Fat Tuesday and the days leading up to the holidays. It used to be paczki were eaten just on Fat Tuesday, but the tradition has expanded to the whole month leading up to Lent. But where can you get them? And when?
