WOODVILLE — A Vermilion man was killed and a Vermilion woman suffered life-threatening injuries when their vehicle apparently pulled in front of a semitrailer Sunday morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Another man suffered serious injuries.

Golden J. Carpenter, 71, of Vermilion, was pronounced dead at the scene. The front-seat passenger, Dorothy D. Carpenter, 81, of Vermilion, was transported to Toledo Hospital by Woodville EMS with life-threatening injuries. The rear passenger, Richard C. Carpenter, 70, of Lorain, was transported by air ambulance to University of Toledo Medical Center Hospital with serious injuries.

The semitrailer driver, Dana F. Richmond, 42, of Toledo, was taken to Bay Park Hospital by Woodville Township EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

Golden Carpenter was southbound on Ohio 51 in a 2017 Ford Fusion and stopped at the stop sign for U.S. 20. He pulled out into the path of a westbound commercial semitrailer and was struck on the driver’s side door. Both vehicles came to rest in the turn lanes of U.S. 20 west of the intersection.

The crash occurred at 9:54 a.m. Sunday.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and seat belts were used. The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Woodville Township Fire and EMS, Life Flight, Sandusky County Coroner and Madison’s towing.
