Local man calls 9-1-1 while clinging to train for 60 miles

Authorities say two men hopped a moving CSX train in Willard and then clung to it for about 60 miles.

Christian Hale, 20, and Kevin Slone, 24, have been charged with trespassing. CSX might pursue additional charges.

The incident began about 4 a.m. Tuesday. As the train sped up, the men couldn’t get off, so Hale called 9-1-1.

Authorities said the train reached speeds of 45 to 50 miles per hour.

The dispatcher notified CSX, which stopped the train in Wayne County’s Doylestown. The pair fled but were arrested after sheriff’s deputies located them about a mile away.

Hale told deputies they intended to ride through Willard and then jump off.

A story on Cleveland’s News Channel 5 website includes some of the 9-1-1 conversation with Hale and the dispatcher.
