Man dies in area plane crash

CARLISLE TWP. — A plane crash killed an area man Sunday afternoon in Lorain County. 

At about 2:31 p.m. Sunday, state Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a plane crash that had taken place near the Elyria Airport on Middle Avenue. The single-engine Piper Club was piloted by 63-year-old Joseph Begany, of Elyria.

Begany sustained multiple injuries from the crash and then succumbed to his injuries, troopers said. The plane sustained heavy damage in the collision. 

The preliminary investigation will be handled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the investigation will remain ongoing.

Agencies assisting troopers at the scene included the FAA, the Carlisle Fire Department, Life Care Ambulance Service, the Lorain County Coroner’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Aviation Section.
