SANDUSKY — A man was killed and his wife injured tonight after both were thrown from a motorcycle when it ran into the back of an SUV in Sandusky.

The two-vehicle fatal crash, which remains under investigation, happened at about 8:32 p.m. Sunday on Cleveland Road, east of Remington Avenue, Sandusky, in Erie County.

Dale Thompson, 40, of Elyria, was driving his 2011 Ford Escape eastbound on Cleveland Road when he came to a complete stop in the roadway due to traffic stopping in front of him.

Carl Webb, 62, also of Elyria, was riding his 2005 Harley Davidson eastbound on Cleveland Road behind Thompson. Webb failed to maintain an assured cleared distance ahead and struck Thompson’s vehicle on the right rear. Webb and his passenger and wife Shirley Webb, 60, were both ejected from the motorcycle.

Carl Webb was transported to Firelands Hospital by Sandusky EMS and was later pronounced dead, having succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. Shirley Webb sustained incapacitating injuries and also was transported to Firelands Hospital.

Neither were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Thompson and his four other passengers were all wearing their safety belts. None of them were injured in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Erie County Sheriff’s Department, Sandusky Police Department, Sandusky Fire and EMS and Wilson’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
