St. Paul girls win NWOSCA cross country meet

NORWALK — The St. Paul girls won the Northwest Ohio Catholic Schools Association cross country meet on Monday at the Norwalk Reservoir.

The Flyers placed five in the top 10 to score 23 points, followed by St. Mary Central Catholic (35) and Mansfield St. Peter’s (82).

Two-time state qualifier Lily Dowdell was the overall winner, turning in a 20:58.3. Claire Ceccoli was third in 23:05.9, while Cheyene Null (24:31.2) and Catherine Massie (24:51.7) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

Madelyn McCall was 10th (25:28.4) for St. Paul, with Dana Sumpter (25:29.3) right behind in 11th. Rachel Beat also scored for the Flyers (26:08) by placing 14th.

In the boys race, SMCC won with 28 points, followed by St. Paul (59), Fremont St. Joseph (64), St. Peter’s (107) and Tiffin Calvert (114).

Noah Avendano was the overall winner in 17:29, followed Zach Stine (18:51) in sixth. Ryan Gross was 17th (21:25), followed by Stephen McHale (21:25) in 18th and Owen Duncan (21:35) in 20th.


Tol. Notre Dame 4, Norwalk 1

TOLEDO — Norwalk lost its opening round Ohio Tennis Coaches Association match vs. Notre Dame Academy in Toledo on Monday.

With the loss, the Truckers fell to 4-1 overall ahead of today’s SBC Lake match vs. Tiffin Columbian.

Norwalk’s lone win on Monday came at first doubles. The team of Jordan Gran and Megan Berry won a lengthy three-set match, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-5.

At first singles, Gabby Horowitz fell 6-1, 6-3, to Notre Dame’s CC Patten. Lauren Metcalf fell at second singles to Olivia Assenbacher (6-0, 6-0), while Alexa Moore fell to Julia Loeb (6-3, 6-0).

In No. 2 doubles action, Sela and Mara Berry fell to Erin Sturgeon and Gretchen Gimotter (6-4, 6-4).

Willard 5, Clyde 0

WILLARD — The Crimson Flashes got in the win column Monday after opening the season with a 3-2 loss to Galion in OTCA action last week.

At first singles, Emma Moll topped the Fliers’ Lakotah Cagle (7-5, 6-1). Carlee Gibson topped Siera Hisey at second singles (7-5, 6-4), and Addie Paxton beat Emma Strudthoff at third singles (6-0, 6-1).

At No. 1 doubles, Addie Slone and Jo Brubaker won over Mary Wilkerson and Madi Bannister (6-1 6-1). Capping the sweep was Whitney Robinson and Kennedy Daub at second doubles (6-1, 6-4) over Clyde’s Megan Barrett and Hali Hagemeyer.

Edison 5, Upper Sandusky 0

MILAN — The Chargers swept their way past visiting Upper Sandusky in a non-league match on Monday to improve to 2-1.

At first singles, Mariah Medina won (6-1, 6-4) over Jodi Smalley, while Jayla Medina topped Emma Schoenberger (6-0, 6-4) at No. 2 singles. At third singles, Emily Vogus beat Calle Manzi (6-1, 6-0).

At first doubles, Kaylee Ries and Torri Keyser topped Abby Davidson and Mara Smalley (6-1, 6-4). Second doubles saw Lexi Weyer and Emily Moore beat Hannah Frey and Emma Swihart (6-1, 6-0).

Edison visits Tiffin Calvert today in a league match.


St. Paul 183, Oak Harbor 186

OAK HARBOR — The Flyers picked up a win over the host Rockets at the Oak Harbor Golf Club on Monday.

For St. Paul, four girls recorded personal best scores for nine holes. Miller Hosack led the way with a 42, followed by Tori Pocos (45), Sara Scavuzzo (46) and Brooke Bleile (50).

Also for the Flyers, Catherine Juby had a 53, while Sammy Lippert shot a 56.

“I’m super proud of the girls for stepping up and playing to their potential,” St. Paul coach Tacy Bond said. “It makes me excited to see where we can go from here.”

Norwalk seventh at Lexington Invite

MANSFIELD — The Norwalk girls golfers placed seventh with a 448 score at the Lexington Invitational, played at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield on Monday.

For Norwalk, Anna Little fired a 96 (51-48) to pace the team. Hannah Dambeck (51-52—103) was next, followed by Noelle Jackson (58-63—121), Chloe Thomas (63-62—125), Emily Berry (66-76—142) and Whittley Castle (71-81—152).

Jackson hit a hole-in-one on the par 3 hole No. 6 at the course. She used a 7-iron.


Bellevue 3, Margaretta 0

BELLEVUE — The Lady Red opened the season with a sweep over visiting Margaretta on Monday, 25-15, 25-11, 25-10.

For Bellevue (1-0), Taylor Baxter was 22-of-22 hitting with 14 kills and 15 for 15 serving with an ace. Payton Vogel was 20-of-23 hitting with 15 kills, three blocks and 10 digs.

Also for the Lady Red, Madison Hrynciw was 15 for 15 serving with four aces and 10 digs. Molly Bullion was 80-of-80 setting with 37 assists and eight digs.

Bellevue hosts Galion tonight.

South Central 3, SMCC 0

GREENWICH — The South Central volleyball team opened the season with a non-league win on Saturday over visiting St. Mary Central Catholic.

The Trojans won in three, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.

For South Central, Izzy Hauler was 30-of-35 hitting with eight kills, while Taylor Sexton added three kills and Ellery McKee had two.

McKee was also 93-of-94 setting with 23 assists, while Lorin Walcher had 29 digs and two aces serving. Sexton also added 14 digs.

South Central will host Monroeville on Tuesday in a Firelands Conference matchup.


St. Paul 219, Mapleton 223

ASHLAND — The Flyers picked up their first win overall and in Firelands Conference play with Monday’s narrow victory over the Mounties at Brookside golf course.

For St. Paul, Jackson Cook shot a 43, followed by Nathan Juby (55), Luke Meyer (59) and Logan Amato (62). Also scoring for the Flyers was David Swope (65) and Dylan Cook (67).

New London 154, Plymouth 167

SHELBY — The Wildcats remained unbeaten on the season with Monday’s FC win over the Big Red at Woody Ridge golf course.

For New London (5-0, 1-0), Ben Crswshaw shot a four-under par 32 to finish as medalist. He was followed by Sean Andolsek (39), Jaylin Moffit (40), Sean Armold (43), Marcus Mayhorn (48) and Luke Smith (55).

Plymouth was led by Jacob Adams with a 37. Also for the Big Red, Draven Kelley had a 41, followed by Nate Sexton (44), Zeb Finnegan (45) and Emily Blanton (51).

New London entertains Crestview on Wednesday.

Willard 179, Port Clinton 209

CATAWBA ISLAND — The Crimson Flashes cruised to an SBC Bay division win on Monday at the Catawba Island Club.

For Willard (7-1), Ian Brown and Trey Mock each led the way with a 43. They were followed by Kolin McKelvey (44), Michael Carnahan (49), Will Lindenberger (55) and Micah Dawson (58).

Margaretta 175, Edison 217

CLYDE — The Chargers fell to 0-4 in SBC Bay division play with Monday’s loss to the Polar Bears at Sleepy Hollow golf course.

For Edison, Casey Fair shot a 47, followed by Aden Hall (52), Noah Pulaski (57) and Matthew Pound (61).

Clyde 169, Bellevue 197

CLYDE — The Redmen fell in Monday’s SBC Lake division match against the host Fliers at Green Hills golf course.

For Bellevue, Connor Rospert was low with a 46. He was followed by Alex Martinez (48), Layne Krupp (49) and Garrett Vickery (54).


Edison 6, Mans. St. Peter’s 5

MILAN — The Chargers opened the season with a high-scoring win over Mansfield St. Peter’s in non-league play Monday night.

Aliyah Caporini and Piper Nickoli each had a pair of goals for the Chargers, while Sophie Clark and Hannah Ceja each scored once.

Clark had two assists, while Caporini, Nickoli and Holly Racioppi each had one assist.

Edison hosts Upper Sandusky at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
