How many light bulbs are in your house?

By JIM BUSEK • Mar 6, 2018 at 10:00 AM

Question (from the radio Quickie Quiz last Monday): The average home has 41 of these. What are they?

Answer: Light bulbs.

We are apparently above average. Our home has 159 light bulbs in sockets and 22 more in a box in our pantry.

I couldn’t believe it. But I went room by room and counted. Part of the reason for the surprising total is the large number of little, tiny lights we have: 19 under our kitchen cabinets and 10 illuminating a decorative space above our living room.

But we have surprising numbers of bulbs elsewhere, too: 17 outdoors, 25 in four bathroom spaces, 15 in our combined living room/dining room, five LED bulbs in one refrigerator alone, and 10 in the room where I am writing this story.

Of course, I probably shouldn’t be surprised. We have big numbers of everything else, too.

Saturday night, for instance, the return of Daylight Saving Time will cause us to re-set 28 clocks, watches, computers, phones and other devices that tell what time it is.

We have four television sets and seven remote controls, two of which control devices we no longer have. There are 171 buttons on these remotes. I only know what 12 of those buttons do.

We have three landline telephones which we always let ring through to the answering machine because the caller never seems to be you or anybody else we want to talk to.

I have three pairs of running shoes, one pair of hiking boots and 22 pairs of running and hiking socks in two drawers dedicated just to them.

We have two refrigerators and four coolers.

We have seven sinks.

I have eight gasoline powered devices for working on my lawn and landscape.

I have one gasoline powered device to blow snow.

I always buy fertilizer for 30,000 square feet of lawn. I have no idea how many square feet of lawn I actually have.

I have 41 folders in two filing cabinets.

I have three bicycles with a total of 48 gears.

We have 13 deer that graze in our backyard. We have at least one coyote.

We have three potato peelers, and a half-empty five pound bag of potatoes.

I have 51 foreign coins in a drawer.

There are currently nine items on our grocery list.

I have two credit cards and nine other cards that look like credit cards but really just earn airline miles or allow me to have surgery if I need it.

I have two combs. I do not know why.

We have nine wine glasses but not enough matching table glasses for when company comes.

We have 19 chairs and five ottomans. I almost always sit in only three of them. I use one of the ottomans when I put on my shoes.

We subscribe to one newspaper and one magazine.

We have more than 30 keys. We use two of them almost every day to start our cars. We do not know what most of the rest are for.

I have a key chain from a Honda motorcycle I sold 51 years ago. It is one of four key chains I never use.

It required 3003 keystrokes to create the 571 words to tell you all this.

It is hard to believe I have been writing this column 40.4 years.

There are 2101 Mondays in 40.4 years.
