The chicken barbecue starts being served at 11 a.m. June 21 at shelter No. 1 at Veterans Memorial Lake Park. Included in the meal are potato salad, green beans, a cookie and roll. “We would like to see this become an annual event,” said Lisa Gleisner, activities director for the Enrichment Centers. “Tickets are available now until they sell out.”
Doug Long will be manning the grill all day. He has overseen similar chicken barbecues for the Huron River Joint Fire District for many years. Long is the assistant chief.
“He is donating his services,” Gleisner said. “Doug’s mom, Maralyn, has been a big supporter of this center for years and he is graciously donating his services for the day.”
In addition to the chicken will be a 50/50 raffle, live music, corn hole and a raffle for new Weber Spirit grill donated by Greg and Lisa Bleile from Ace Hardware. With a retail value of $449, it has been on display at entrance of the Enrichment Centers for Huron County. The winner of the grill doesn’t need to be present.
“I called Lisa and Greg. The first question (from Lisa) was, ‘When do you need it by?’ They were very generous and I am gracious,” Gleisner said.
“It will be on display on there,” she added, referring to the chicken barbecue.
Local singer Deb Vargo will provide the music at the reservoir shelter.
“She does mostly country — old country,” said Gleisner, who received the recommendation from Tom Dunlap, former Huron County sheriff and commissioner.
Money from the chicken barbecue will go to the Enrichment Centers building projects. The non-profit organization plans to move the Norwalk facility into the former Foodtown grocery store building across from Fisher-Titus Medical Center on Benedict Avenue as well as to renovate the Willard building. The move and renovations would nearly double their current space at both locations.
“If you can’t stay, we’re encouraging people to come out for lunch. This is the first day of summer, so let’s kick off summer,” Gleisner said.
