COLLINS — The Western Reserve girls basketball team had a tall order on Saturday in a non-league game against visiting Perkins.

The results played out that way, as the Roughriders fell behind 21-6 in the first quarter and never recovered in a 76-46 loss to the Pirates at Western Reserve High School.

The Pirates were led by senior guard Olivia Howard. The three-time Sandusky Bay Conference first-team selection, who averaged 17.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.8 steals a year ago, dropped in a game-high 32 points.

An NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace recruit in both basketball and track and field, Howard helped lead the Pirates to 18 wins last season and is also a state qualifier in track.

Avery Tubbs led Western Reserve (1-1) with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-6 from the three-point line. She also had three steals. Gabrielle Duchette had 10 points, while McKenna Woodruff finished with seven points and 11 rebounds.

Ellie Blankenship grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss, while Ashlyn Barnhart added three steals. As a team, Western was 15-of-39 shooting with 40 rebounds, eight steals and eight assists.

It gets no easier for Western Reserve, which visits Div. III power Margaretta at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
