NEW LONDON — The New London boys basketball team closed out the regular season with an 68-66 double-overtime win over visiting Crestview on Friday to finish .500 overall and in the Firelands Conference.

New London (11-11, 7-7) also celebrated a program milestone in the win, as senior Karson Howell became the program’s all-time points leader at the school. Howell entered the game 23 points behind Ryan Lane (1,129), and scored a game-high 27 points to enter next Tuesday’s Division III sectional semifinal vs. Huron with 1,134 career points.

The Wildcats led by four points at halftime (34-30) and 50-44 after three quarters, but the Cougars were able to force overtime. Finally, the ‘Cats outscored the visitors 4-2 in the second extra session.

After Howell’s 27 points, New London got 20 points from Ashton Carruthers, while Ben Crawshaw added nine and Jared Ross scored eight. In all, New London made 12 3-pointers in the win.

“Senior night, a lot of stuff going on obviously, but I thought we came out pretty well,” New London coach Tom Howell said. “But we went through a stretch where we didn’t shoot the ball really well. Our defense got a little lackadaisical and we didn't’ rebound very well — and they took advantage.

“They kept themselves in game getting second and third shots,” he added. “But we’re happy to pull it out, and it was a fun game to be a part of.”

New London will face the Tigers (10-10) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Monroeville.
